Allow Me Introduce Myself
My name is Normand Richard and I was
born in Mont-Carmel, PE on the 17 Jan, 1954 and I am visually Impaired. I
am bilingual and my two main languages are French and English, and I did
learn the basic grade one Braille and I learned Morse-code because I have
a hobby as a amateur radio operator. My story began when my family
started selling Irving products. My grand-father began selling these
products in 1932 for a company originally from Summerside. In the summer
of 1960, my father pondered discussions about building an Irving gas
station in Mont-Carmel PEI and after numerous meetings in Charlottetown
and letters to M. KC Irving, the construction finally began. After its
opening in august of 1961, my uncle took the role as the manager where I
worked as a part time employee for 4 years and a full time employee for 25
years. He gave me my first job and we worked together for 29 years. I
had numerous responsibilities such as pumping the gas, and
maintenance work. It was across the road from my home so it was quite
convenient. But when my uncle was forced to retire, I could not upkeep
the business without help because of my visual lost. So in October
1999, the gas station had to be shut down. It was all I knew for so
long and it was a big part of my life but since that time I have taken
on different adventures that have led me to develop new skills.

Mon histoire a commencé quand mon
grand-père vendait des produits Irving pour une compagnie de Summerside.
Au cours de l’été de 1960, mon père considérait bâtir une station de
service en face de notre maison, par contre ce ne fut pas facile. Il a dû
rencontrer les responsables de la compagnie à Charlottetown et il a aussi
dû communiquer avec monsieur K.C. Irving à de nombreuses reprises. La
construction a finalement été terminée au mois d’août 1961 et mon oncle a
pris le rôle de gérant. J’ai travaillé pour lui à temps partiel pour
quatre années et à temps pleins pour vingt-cinq années. Nous avons
travaillé ensemble vingt-neuf ans. Il m’a offert mon premier emploi et
je ne l’oublierai jamais. Mes tâches et responsabilités étaient nombreuses,
tel que le maintien et le service à la clientèle. Mon travail étant juste
en face de ma maison, c’était très pratique pour moi à cause de mon
problème de vue. Par contre, mon oncle a dû se retirer et je ne pouvais
plus maintenir la station en raison de ma vue. C’est en octobre 1999 que
la station a fermé ses portes. C’était tout ce que je connaissais depuis
longtemps et c’était une grosse partie de ma vie, mais depuis ce temps-là,
j’ai embarqué dans d’autres aventures qui m’ont permis à développer de
nouvelles connaissances qui ont enrichi ma vie.
